Gold, silver and bronze prizes of the International Contest for Young Musicians ‘Nutcracker’ will be awarded at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. One more intrigue remains: will the Grand Prix of the contest find its recipient this year?

Gold, silver and bronze prizes of the International Contest for Young Musicians ‘Nutcracker’ will be awarded at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall today. One more intrigue remains: will the Grand Prix of the contest find its recipient this year? The viewers may support their favourite contestants by SMS – according to the results of the vote one of the young musicians will be awarded the Audience Prize.

Clarinettist Andrei Ryazantzev felt exhausted after the first two rounds of the contest, but when he learned that he got admitted to the final, Andrei managed to put himself back together. He is determined to fight till the end. Andrei has already performed with a chamber orchestra, but this will be his first time with a symphony orchestra. In Round III he will play Dance Preludes by W. Lutosławski.

‘The difficulty is in that the orchestra doesn’t accompany, but just play. We play together, our themes interlace. The piece is peculiar and lively’, Andrei comments.

Little princess of the contest Leia Zhu from the Great Britain will perform Violin concerto in e-moll by F. Mendelssohn. During the short time given for the rehearsing Leia has charmed both the conductor ant the orchestra musicians. The girl confesses she is not tired at all and everything that happens is just like a magical fairytale.

Unlike her, Nikolai Varlamov cannot say he is full of energy. Despite looking confident, the musician is a bit nervous. ‘Nutcracker’ is not his first contest. In 2014 Nikolai was awarded Prize I of the International Chopin Competition in Poland. By the way, Chopin is his favourite composer. But in the Round III Nikolai will perform ‘Naughty Limericks’ by R. Shchedrin.

Nikolai was the only in the ‘Piano’ section to be awarded highest points by all the judges. Three of the participants ended up with equal results, so the Jury had to set additional discussion in order to choose the one who shall be left behind. The same happened in the ‘Wind & Percussion Instruments’.

‘It is a preparation to adult life, where such situations may occur. It is better for the participant to rather ignore it than dive into soul-searching and analyzing ‘Why not me’, Ekaterina Mechetina, member of the Jury, stresses.

Nearly all the pieces to be performed in the third round are festive and cheerful. No dramas or tragedies. Why, if all the 9 finalists already are the ‘Nutcracker’ winners.

Live broadcast of the Final and Closing Ceremony watch on 7 December, 19:10, on our channel and website.
