Boris Berezovsky Remains Focal Point of Mystery and Conspiracy Even After Death
A very quiet story. A photo of Boris Berezovsky's grave in Brookwood cemetery appeared online. Radio journalist, Aleksey Venediktov, posted it on his private resource. It's an abandoned hill with a wooden cross, which looks like the same one from his funeral day.
That was in 2013, over 4 years ago. Boris Berezovsky is the hero of the oligarchical business in Russia in the 1990s. For some time, he was the richest person in Russia. He even thought he ruled the country. He was the mastermind behind many schemes. An absolute master of political intrigues, very energetic.
In the late 1990s, when the government in Russia started to change, Berezovsky couldn't find himself here. Boris Abramovich immigrated to London, and he used all his talents and innovations to start a revolution.
In Russia, he wasn't very good at it. In Ukraine, with the first Orange Revolution, when Timoshenko and Yushchenko grabbed power, he got a little luckier.
He spent billions of dollars on everything, including his annoying friends. The billions, which he smuggled out of Russia, were spent on operations, diversions, organizations, movements. Also, websites, movies, pseudo-media, constructed analytics, knick-knacks, and coy people. They were parasites on Berezovsky's weaknesses. Where are all they now? And what is the result of all that?
Apology letters to Putin, enormous debts, loneliness, lack of goals, as well as lack of strong points. And then, either a suicide, or a homicide, English-style. And now, just a hill with an abandoned cross in a foreign land. Too much in his life was surreal. Just like his grave is now. Our correspondent, Aleksandr Khabarov, reports from London.
At Brookwood cemetery, Berezovsky is buried next to his mother. Even in the most abstinent measures, his last home looks horribly poor. It's true what they say, "Sic transit Gloria mundi." Or "Worldly things are fleeting".
The figure of Boris Berezovsky was too important and colorful to now just lay there in absolute oblivion. He led a scandalous life, and even his death left behind mysteries.
In March 2013, Berezovsky's body was found in this mansion, owned by his former second wife, Galina Besharova. The main version was suicide. But the investigation left a so-called open verdict. This means Berezovsky may have been murdered.
His funeral was attended by relatives, some friends, his lawyers, and a former bodyguard. Maybe, all of them carefully hid their feelings, but nobody saw anyone sincerely mourning. They did, however, give mean looks to the journalists.
By that time, his family was already fighting constantly. To make matters worse, they had to split the inheritance.
There's information, that not too late before his death, Berezovsky planned to go back to Russia. That's when he wrote a letter to Putin, admitting his sins. Oligarch's former assistant, Sergey Sokolov, confirms that Berezovsky really counted on Kremlin's forgiveness.
Sergey Sokolov, former Berezovsky's assistant: "He wanted to start his life over. You understand that if a person is preparing for something, then before he waits, prepares, wanting this change, committing suicide makes no sense, it just doesn't happen".
One can speculate what it was, a suicide or a homicide? But even when there is no new information, the deceased oligarch continues to surprise us, this time with an abandoned grave. He loved the press' attention in life, Berezovsky is talked about again, against his own will.
