Moscow Hits Record Crime Lows - Mayor Sobyanin Summed Up Remarkable Year at Police Conference


The previous year was the safest in Moscow's contemporary history. The number of robberies, acts of disorderly conduct, and felonies has decreased. The mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin shared the news at the conference of the Moscow police.

At the police conference, The Moscow law enforcement has summed up the results of 2017 and set its future objectives. There's much to do but they are experienced at reaching ambitious goals. In 2017, the number of solved crimes increased by almost 33%.
The chief of the Moscow GU MVD Oleg Baranov presented a detailed report on the work of the police. 140,000 crimes were registered but the number of the appeals from the citizens decreased for the first time since 2003. Compared to 2016 the number of robberies, mugging, thefts, and carjackings decreased by 30%. There were also fewer registered cases of fraud, disorderly conduct, and extortion. One of the main focus areas of the police is the fight against organized crime. In 2017, the police arrested almost 1500 leaders and active members of criminal gangs eliminated 18 criminal associations seized more than a ton of drugs and deported more than 20,000 illegal migrants. More than 22 billion rubles were returned to the budget from the hands of the fraudsters.
Oleg Baranov, chief of Moscow GU MVD: "The number of acts of extremists has decreased by almost 19%. There hasn't been a single extremism-based murder. The number of prevented acts of terrorism has increased by 43%".
The chief of the local police thanked Sergey Sobyanin for helping to strengthen the technical base and social support programs for the officers.
The mayor pointed out the perfect law enforcement at the mass events. And there were a lot in 2017. More than 21 million guests visited Moscow. In 2018, the Moscow police have even more serious and ambitious objectives.
Sergey Sobyanin, mayor of Moscow: "The presidential elections are in March, the mayoral are in September. Between the two campaigns, Moscow is hosting the FIFA World Cup in Summer. In these circumstances, law enforcement is our top priority".
According to the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Colonel-General Alexander Gorovoy due to the upcoming elections, the police must increase its efficiency preventing provocations and riots.
