Artist and sculptor, People's Artist of Kabardino-Balkaria, full member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Honorary Doctor of the Academy of European Art in Paris, Honorary Doctor of the University of San Francisco, laureate of the Russian Federation National Award (1993), Knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters (1994), recipient of the Russian Academy of Arts medal 'To one deserving' (1998).

Mihail Chemiakin works with a wide range of art forms: from drawing to monumental sculpture.  His creations vary in themes from theatrical productions to metaphysical research.

Chemiakin adapted the libretto and designed costumes, masks and sets for Tchaikovsky’s ballet 'The Nutcracker' for a production at the Mariinsky theater which premiered in 2001 in St. Petersburg. The artist subsequently wrote a libretto and designed costumes, masks and sets for an original ballet, 'The Magic Nut', relating the history of the Nutcracker. The ballet, with original music by Sergei Slonimsky, premiered at the Mariinsky Theater in 2005.

In 2012 Mihail Chemiakin created the prize for winners of the 'Nutcracker' International Television Contest for Young Musicians. In 2015, for the fourth year in a row, laureates of the Contest will receive statuettes designed by Chemiakin.
